
Susann Winkler, BFU
Susann Winkler is an aviation safety and accident investigator for the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) since 2019. Her objective is to identify the causes and circumstances of national and international aircraft accidents and serious incidents to prevent such events in the future and promote aviation safety. From gathering evidence on site and analysing all potential contributing factors to writing the final reports and issuing safety recommendations, she focuses especially on understanding and learning from the human factors and organizational influences involved in such occurrences. Since 2015, Susann is a member of the HFES Europe Chapter. At the annual HFES meeting in Rome in 2017, she received the Best Poster Award for her research on multi-stage warning systems. A year later, she finished her PhD on Human information processing in safety critical situations, while working as research associate and lecturer at the Department of Engineering and Traffic Psychology of Technical University Braunschweig (Germany). She received a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Safety and Accident Investigation from the Cranfield University (UK) in 2022. Susann also enjoys flying herself thanks to her Private Pilot license (PPL(A)).
