Magnus Liebherr

Magnus Liebherr (University of Duisburg-Essen)

Magnus Liebherr leads the working group “Human-Factors and Cognition” at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany. His research examines the cognitive, affective, and behavioural mechanisms underlying human interaction with intelligent and autonomous technologies. Integrating cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and engineering, he investigates how human cognitive functions shape performance, safety, trust, and well-being in complex socio-technical systems. His work spans automated mobility, AI-supported decision making, and digital environments, with a focus on designing technologies that align with human capabilities and limitations. Key topics include mental workload, situation awareness, individual differences, and contextual factors influencing effective human-automation collaboration.

He has held international research stays at institutions including the Karolinska Institutet (Sweden), the University of South Australia (Australia), and Hamad Bin Khalifa University (Qatar). He earned a PhD in applied cognitive science and psychology and completed a habilitation (venia legendi) in Human Factors and Ergonomics in 2025. He also serves as Visiting Professor at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Magnus has been a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society since 2019 and is actively engaged in the human factors community in Europe, including serving as Speaker of the Engineering Psychology Section of the German Psychological Society. He is committed to strengthening interdisciplinary exchange and advancing human-centred approaches to emerging technologies.
