After four years as aircrew in the US Air
Force, Donald Vreuls earned a BS, Psychology, University of Illinois, 1961, and joined Martin-Marietta Corporation. He served on the Apollo Spacecraft Command Module design team for a seven day lunar orbit mission simulation using astronauts to test the design and the effects of confinement. He studied human error on a missile system, then did four years of in-flight research on pilot performance using experimental flight control and display systems for all-weather (blind) landing. He holds a Private Pilot’s licence, Airplane Single and Multi-engine Land, and Instrument.

His division of Martin-Marietta became the Bunker-Ramo Corporation where he then served as Technical Director for flight simulator studies of fault warning systems during blind landings for the FAA. This work examined the role of pilots in automated flight control systems — similar to today’s questions with automated vehicles. He then joined two small research companies to perform field studies of night vision image intensifier systems for the US Army and study human performance measurement during flight training for the US Navy.
Founding VRC Corporation (1977), he developed a training performance measurement system for nuclear power station control room operators after receiving an intensive operator training course. His performance measurement development work continued for the US Navy, Air Force, and United Airlines as VRC expanded into Operational Test and Evaluation services for the US Department of Defense. He founded the VRC grant program in 2000. Although retired, he looks forward to the possibility of further serving the Chapter if elected.
