Biography Bob Hockey
Bob Hockey
Bob Hockey is Professor of Cognitive Engineering and Human Factors at the University of Sheffield, and a Fellow of the Ergonomics Society. He carried out his PhD on environmental stress and complex visual displays with Donald Broadbent in Cambridge, then worked at the Universities of Durham, Sheffield, Hull, Leeds and Sheffield (again), as well as extended periods in Stockholm and Oregon and numerous visits to Groningen and TNO Soesterberg. His research has focused on the adaptive control of attention in the maintenance of complex mental work, with a central interest in the role of effort and fatigue in the management of stressor effects. His current research, in conjunction with control engineers at Sheffield, is concerned with identifying brain markers of cognitive fatigue that can provide inputs into adaptive automation. He has been involved for many years with the European Space Agency, and more recently with national UK bodies involved with human factors in rail research and nuclear safety. He was one of the organisers of the 2006 annual chapter meeting in Sheffield and co-editor of the proceedings.
